Linking power and inequality in global value chains

There is increasing interest in the study of globalization on whether emergence and consolidation global value chains (GVCs) have exacerbated inequalities within across nations and/or how GVCs may be leveraged to mitigate them. Although power asymmetries been identified as a central factor shaping (un)successful GVC participation, dominant discourses still disregard links between inequality or use these concepts interchangeably. In this article, we provide an analytical approach GVC-related (within, along through chains) examine they co-evolve with different types (bargaining, demonstrative, institutional constitutive). We apply case hake chain South Africa illustrate existing are manifested, challenged, mitigated exacerbated—and draw agenda for future research.
